How the U.S. Supports Peacekeeping in Africa: Policing and Training

Police trainer and former police chief Mark Mew, recently returned from Benin, West Africa, discussed his experiences providing police training in support of peacekeeping in Africa. Mark Mew has more 20 years of experience in police work and served as the chief of the Anchorage Police Department. He also has worked as the Director of Security and Emergency Preparedness for the Anchorage School District. Bering Straits Native Corporation is the entity through which Mew provided the training.

The Fairbanks 4: Lessons Learned from ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ's First Exoneration

The ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ Innocence Project and the Office of Public Advocacy spearheaded the effort to exonerate the Fairbanks Four — four men convicted in 1999 of the 1997 beating death of a Fairbanks youth. This panel discussion of the exoneration featured two of the lawyers involved in the case, as well as a forensic scientist who provided expert testimony.

The Eighth Polar Law Symposium was held Sept. 23 to 24, 2015, at the University of ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ Fairbanks and Sept. 25 to 26, 2015, at the ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ. This was the first Polar Law Symposium to be held in the U.S. and it coincided with the U.S. Chairmanship of the Arctic Council.

The Minor Consuming Alcohol (MCA) Conference was organized in response to concern about MCA cases and underage drinking in ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ, and was held April 4, 2014, at the ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ Court System's Snowden Training Center in downtown Anchorage.

"No More Silence in the Dark" was an event cosponsored by the Justice Center at ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ (UAA) and the Omega Xi chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society. The event was presented as part of National Criminal Justice Month 2014 and "UAA Says No More" week.

Judges from Kenaitze Indian Tribe Tribal Court also attended the event and participated in the question and answer session.
