Sick fish
by Kathleen McCoy |
Dr. Frank von Hippel recently published articles about the pollutant perchlorates
effect on fish. Articles about his recent research were in the Environmental Health
Perspectives, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Science News Online and the
Anchorage Daily News.
Dr. von Hippel has done extensive research on the stickleback fish and more recently
with graduate students on perchlorate. Perchlorate is a pollutant that often turns
up in soil and water. Previous studies have shown that it changes thyroid concentrations,
which can affect growth and neurological development. Data from fish now indicate
that perchlorate can also disrupt sexual development. For more information, contact
