Spring 2008: Jill S. Prewitt biology thesis defense
by Kathleen McCoy |
Developmental and Environmental Effects on the Metabolic Characteristics of Harbor
Seal (Phoca Vitulina) Muscle by Jill S. Prewitt, candidate for Master of Science in Biological Sciences UAA will
be presented this afternoon, Thursday, Feb. 28 from 2-3 p.m. in GHH 103. This thesis
defense will also be broadcast for UAF in O'Neil 201, UAS Egan 116 and at the Seward
Marine Center Rae Building.
The biochemistry and morphology of skeletal muscle varies with animal age, diet and
condition, and these variations can both impact, and be impacted by an animal's activity
patterns. Furthermore, because muscle metabolic characteristics and the types of activity
that can be supported are tightly linked, in wild animals this phenotypic plasticity
can lead to impacts on performance, foraging ability, and ultimately survival.
