Frost heaves shape the landscape

by Jamie Gonzales  |

When you think of frost heaves, you probably think about bumping down spring roads and-depending on the vintage of your vehicle's shock absorption systems- being surprised by a sudden dip or rise in the asphalt. But frost heaves have an impact on the landscape beyond Anchorage's paved roads. Biological Sciences Professor and the Fulbright Distinguished U.S. Arctic Chair-Norway Jeff Welker gives you a first-hand look and explanation in this video:

Professor Welker and his research team have been working across the Arctic region, from northern ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ to Greenland, to study low and high Arctic ecosystems. Monitoring changes in carbon and nitrogen cycling and changes in vegetation give researchers a better understanding of climate change and how it will change the landscape of the Arctic.
