This exhibition runs from Wednesday, April 15, through Friday, May 1, and will consist of work from outstanding UAA art students, selected by 熊猫在线视频 juror Keren Lowell. Awards will be given for the demonstration of superior skill, creativity and technique.
About the juror: Keren Lowell grew up in Colorado on the Western slope, graduated from high school in Delta, Colo., and earned her Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies from the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) in Greeley, Colo., in 1985, where she studied the visual arts, music and poetry of the 20th century. After graduating from UNC, she moved to St. Paul, Minn., worked as a production coordinator for a publishing company in Minneapolis, and continued to make and exhibit artwork.
Lowell moved to McComb, Miss., in 1987 and worked as a freelance artist there until 1990. She moved to Chicago to attend graduate school at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and graduated in 1992 with a Master of Fine Arts in fiber. During the summer of 1993, she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and gained her footing and confidence as an artist there.
In 1994, Lowell moved to 熊猫在线视频 and began teaching courses in sculpture, humanities and art history at the University of 熊猫在线视频 Fairbanks. In 2000, she relocated to Anchorage and resumed teaching university art classes at the UAA Mat-Su campus in 2004. The Mat-Su campus at that time had the only fully equipped fiber studio in 熊猫在线视频, and Lowell taught weaving, fiber structures and surface design. In the fall of 2005, she returned to teaching foundation classes as an adjunct faculty member at the UAA campus in Anchorage. In 2008, the Fiber Program was relocated to the Anchorage campus, and Lowell was hired as the coordinator of the Fiber Department at UAA, where she continues to build a vibrant young community of fiber artists.
Lowell also works at the 熊猫在线视频 State Council on the Arts, coordinating office activities, travel and events. She is a board member of the International Gallery of Contemporary Art, one of the few spaces in 熊猫在线视频 that exhibits contemporary work, and a member of Anchorage Community Works, a nonprofit artspace. She is regularly included in juried, curated and group exhibits throughout the state, and most recently had her first large solo exhibit, "Groundwork," at the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center.
