Clifford Orwin is professor of political science, classics, and Jewish studies and a fellow of St. Michael's College and a senior fellow of Massey College at the University of Toronto. He is a distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University, and senior fellow of the Berlin Thucydides Center and an Einstein Fellow at the Topoi Excellence Cluster at the Free University of Berlin. He is affiliated with the Shalom Hartman Center in Jerusalem and the Institute for Political Studies of the Catholic University of Portugal. Author of The Humanity of Thucydides (Princeton University Press, 1994), he has written dozens of chapters and articles on classical, modern, contemporary, and Jewish political thought. He contributes a monthly column on political and cultural issues to The Globe and Mail in Toronto. His major current projects are a book on the role of compassion in modern politics and thought and a volume of studies of the Book of Genesis. He has argued that professors should put teaching first and has won three major teaching awards at the university, including the inaugural J. J. Berry Smith Prize for Excellence in Doctoral Supervision (2013).
The Chartwell Lecture Series, organized by the UAA Department of Political Science, features lectures on a wide range of subjects in the humanities and liberal arts. Lectures are free and open to members of the general public.
