Altar for Roberto
Acrylic on Canvas, 36.5鈥 X 24.5鈥, 2016
Roberto Pedroso Garc铆a was one of our most important collaborators. He was born near
Perico and Agramonte, where we did most of our Cuban research. A dancer and an altar
maker, he was a babalocha who participated in the religious life of the area. Roberto
made friends instantly, was light hearted, energetic and fun loving. He is depicted
here at la Sociedad Africa, an important ceremonial house in Perico. When rituals
were held we ate together at that table. I added the palm branches to signify the
sacred nature of the space. Roberto passed away in April of 2016. This was created
in his memory.
