Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- What does the fee cover?A nominal fee covers less than one third the costs of providing these high-quality academies, which include instruction from UAA Engineering faculty and students, lunch, and other expenses and materials. Generous donations from ConocoPhillips 熊猫在线视频 and MTA Foundation cover the remaining costs.
- I can't afford the fee. Should I still apply?Yes! We want all qualified students to be able to attend the academies, regardless of ability to pay.
- I'm a student in high school. Will these academies be challenging to me?Yes. There are a number of more advanced courses specifically targeted to high school students.
- How does the lottery system work? Each applicant will be randomly assigned a lottery number. We will then begin filling each session of the summer, using each applicant鈥檚 first choice, starting from lottery #1 and continuing until the sessions are full or all lottery numbers are processed (round 1). If there are any spots remaining once Round 1 is complete, all students that indicate that they would be interested in attending a 2nd session will be assigned a 2nd lottery number and the process will be repeated.
- What is the Early-Bird Lottery? All applications that have been submitted prior to the Early-Bird Lottery deadline will be entered in the Early-Bird Lottery. This lottery is conducted in the same manner as the full lottery, except that only a portion of the spots for each session are filled, each applicant is only assigned to one session, and no participants are assigned to waitlists. If participants do not get selected for a session during the early-bird lottery, they will be automatically entered into the full lottery. It is our hope that the Early-Bird Lottery will allow some families to better plan for the summer.
- What if my first choice session is full?If a particular session fills up, then the applicant will be assigned to their 2nd choice session.
- How does the waitlist work?Applicants who do not get their first choice session will be placed on the waitlist for that session. If any of the applicants who receive a spot in a session elect not to enroll in that session, the spot will be offered to the next applicant on the waitlist.
- What happens after the lottery?Registration forms will be sent to accepted applicants, including Liability and Media Waivers. The registration forms, along with the registration fee, will be due by the Registration Deadline (see Application Process). An applicant is enrolled in a session once all the forms and the fee (or waiver) have been received.
- I missed my Registration Deadline. What happens now?If you do not register and pay for a session that your participant has been admitted to by your Registration Deadline (indicated on your Lottery Results/Admission email) your participant will be removed from the session and their spot given to a participant on the waitlist. You may contact the Summer Engineering Academies at sea@alaska.edu to be placed on the end of the waitlist of a session.
