For Sierra Afoa, school and sports have always been intertwined. Her coach/referee father Stan and her mom, Sarah - a two-sport athlete for the Seawolves, with two UAA education degrees - stressed that balance early. On Sunday afternoons, while Sarah graded homework in her classroom at Gladys Wood Elementary, the Afoa kids shot hoops in the school gym. Academics and athletics have been interconnected from the start.
A panel of officials from the ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ Department of Corrections (DOC) and the ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) discussed how ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ tackles the job of providing mental health care to juvenile and adult correctional populations. In the midst of the crowd walked Staci Manier, a UAA alumna (B.A. Human Services '13, with minors in psychology and history) who became community impact director for United Way of Mat-Su in 2014.
In February, UAA junior Kendra Daniels capped the ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ Gymnastics Team’s best performance of the season with a school-record 9.9 score on beam as the ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ Anchorage Seawolves competed against UC Davis. Meet Kendra.
