Academic Honors Housing Scholarship
UAA is pleased to offer UA Scholars and students in the University Honors College (hereafter referred to as 鈥淎cademic Honors Students鈥) a $1,500 annual housing scholarship! The Academic Honors Housing Scholarship is applied each fall and spring semester as a $750 discount off room charges.
The residential community at UAA provides students an unforgettable experience built on the tenets of educational success, social responsibility and community connectedness. Staff members in the Department of Residence Life are dedicated to the success of residents, and work hard to ensure our residence halls and apartments foster a social, educational and inclusive environment.
Academic Honors Living Learning Community (LLC):
After their first year as a student at UAA (see the First-Year-Residential Experience webpage for more information) or living in UAA student housing, Academic Honors Students have the exciting opportunity to be a part of the Academic Honors Living Learning Community (LLC). Taking part in the Academic Honors LLC is an opportunity for students to live with other academically-focused residents, as well as programs and services tailored to this specific group of residents. Residence Life collaborates with staff and faculty from across the institution to make this community a fun and scholarly place to live and learn.
Space in the LLC is limited so be sure and submit your housing application as early as possible as assignments are generally made on a first-come, first-served basis. For detailed instructions on how to apply for student housing, please visit the Residence Life How to Apply webpage. Note: Residents are not required to live in the LLC to receive the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship.
Academic Honors Eligibility
In order to qualify for the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship, a student must only meet the eligibility requirements for either the UA Scholars Award or the University Honors College. Being a UA Scholar and in the University Honors College does not increase the award amount of $750. For more information regarding eligibility requirements, please visit the UA Scholars or University Honors College website
Terms and Conditions
Eligible residents can receive both the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship and the General Housing Scholarship for a total possible annual award of $2,500. The Academic Honors Housing Scholarship can only be awarded in the form of a discount (i.e., a reduction in the amount charged to a student鈥檚 account) and cannot be used to pay for the deposit, application fee or any other charges or fees a student owes to UAA. The discount will automatically be applied to the student accounts of eligible students through the end of the add/drop period each fall and spring semester. Residents who become eligible after this date must contact the Department of Residence Life at uaa_residencelife@alaska.edu in order to have the discount applied to their student account. Requests to apply the discount after the add/drop period will be accepted up until the withdrawal deadline each semester.
In the event a student cancels their Housing and Dining Agreement and is eligible for a full or partial refund of their housing costs, the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship will be removed from the student鈥檚 account and the student will receive any refund they qualify for based on the actual rate of the room. The refund schedule can be found on the Residence Life Cancellation webpage. For more information on current housing and dining rates, please visit the Residence Life Rates webpage.
The scholarship amount, eligibility requirements and determination process, and all other terms related to the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship included here are subject to change, with or without notice, at the sole discretion of the university.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is there a separate application for the housing scholarship?
No, there is not a separate Academic Honors Housing Scholarship application. The scholarship is automatically applied in the form of a discount to the student account of residents who have received the UA Scholars award or been accepted to and in active status with the University Honors College by the end of the add/drop period each fall and spring semester.
-
I noticed that UAA is also offering a $500 General Housing Scholarship. Will I still
receive the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship?
Eligibility for these two scholarships is determined independently from one another. This means that eligible students will receive both a $750 per semester discount through the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship and a $500 per semester discount through the General Housing Scholarship for a potential total discount of $1,250 off the semester room cost for student housing or $2,500 for the academic year.
-
If I move off campus and want to come back to student housing, will I be eligible
to receive the scholarship again?
Yes! As long as you meet all other eligibility requirements, you will receive the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship again.
-
How do I become a part of the Academic Honors LLC?
Academic Honors Students who are not required to be in the First-Year Residential Experience (FYRE) community are eligible for placement in the Academic Honors LLC.
Students can request to be a part of the Academic Honors LLC on their housing application. Students who are interested in joining the Academic Honors LLC and are past the deadline to revisit or amend their completed housing application (the deadline is in early July) can email the Department of Residence Life at uaa_residencelife@alaska.edu with their request.
It is advised that students submit their applications as early as possible for the greatest chance of receiving their first choice for room type and LLC. Assignments are generally made on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
My student housing costs are covered by another scholarship or other funding source.
Can I receive the value of the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship in some other way?

-
I believe I meet all the eligibility requirements to receive the Academic Honors Housing
Scholarship, but it is not reflected on my student account. What should I do?

-
I am living in student housing over the summer. Will the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship
be applied as a discount on the cost for summer housing?
The Academic Honors Housing Scholarship is only applied in the fall and spring semesters. Likewise, the Academic Honors LLC is only operational in the fall and spring semesters. We hope you enjoy your summer though!
-
Will the scholarship impact my financial aid?
Residence Life is obligated to notify the Financial Aid Office when a student鈥檚 semester housing costs have been adjusted in order for the student鈥檚 estimated Cost of Attendance to be updated. It is possible that this adjustment will result in a scenario in which too much aid has been disbursed to the student or the student paid a higher amount than was necessary to the institution. The Financial Aid Office will communicate with students should any of these scenarios apply to them. If you need assistance or have any questions, please contact the Financial Aid Office.
-
Is there anything I need to know about the scholarship for my taxes?
The amount of all scholarships and grants processed by the institution in a calendar year are reported for tax purposes on Form 1098-T. Since the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship is processed as a discount on the amount charged to a student for housing expenses as opposed to a scholarship payment on the student account, this amount will not be reported as a scholarship payment on Form 1098-T.
