Art History
Studying Art History cultivates an empathy for other cultures, visual awareness, critical thinking, and research skills. The Art History Program at UAA combines lower and upper division classes with learning and internship opportunities at the Kimura Gallery. Studies include entry level classes such as Art Appreciation, and the History of Western Art I & II, to upper division seminar-style classes covering the history of creative production from the Renaissance to Contemporary periods. This includes the histories of craft, photography, graphic design, gender in art, and global indigenous arts. The Kimura Gallery is an integral component of the Art History program, acting as a primary research source for students to view artwork by a rotating selection of international and national artists first-hand. The Kimura also provides a limited number of hands-on internship opportunities for students interested in acquiring professional curatorial and exhibition management skills applicable to a career in the arts.
