Scholarship Overview

The first scholarship created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century.

The Schwarzman Scholars Program is designed to build a global community of future leaders who can deepen the understanding between China and the rest of the world. Scholars complete a one-year master's program in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. The program aims to help future leaders meet the challenges of the 21st century and beyond by preparing them to better understand China's culture, economy, governance, and evolving role in the world. The program emphasizes leadership development through academics and the student experience in an environment that encourages interaction and collaboration.

Scholars chosen from around the world for this highly selective, fully-funded program will have an unrivaled opportunity to live in Beijing for a year of study and cultural immersion. Students attend lectures, travel, and develop first-hand exposure to China, its people, and a global group of promising leaders. They will also participate in a mentorship program linking them to business, political, and civil society leaders in the country and in internships with global and national institutions and corporations based in Beijing. Extracurricular activities are available to further enrich the student experience. Through these invaluable opportunities, scholars will greatly increase their leadership and professional capacities, teaching them to cultivate broader perspectives and understand and appreciate different backgrounds, views, and strategies for confronting challenges.

  • Additional Requirements

A UAA institutional endorsement is not required to apply but highly recommended. The institutional endorsement is given after the candidate is evaluated by the Schwarzman Scholarship Campus Interview Committee during the individual campus interview.

Seek advising early in the application process. Schedule an advising appointment with the Schwarzman Scholars Campus Representative, TBD to discuss intent to apply.

    Interview requirements:
Campus interview: Yes, required if following UAA processes and/or if you desire an institutional endorsement*
    National interview: Yes

    Language requirements:
English language proficiency test scores must be submitted with application if your native language is not English. This requirement is waived if you have studied at an undergraduate institution where English was the primary language of instruction (like UAA) for at least two years of your undergraduate academic program. The requirement is also waived if you have studied in English for two or more years at a Master's degree level or higher.

*Please note that you can apply to the Schwarzman Program without receiving help from UAA or the Schwarzman Scholars Campus Representative, in which case a campus interview is not required. This is NOT recommended, as it means you would have no university support during the application process.
